Canadian Beef Industry Conference Made in Manitoba Tour

CCA staff and board members are attending the Canadian Beef Industry Conference in Winnipeg this week. Some participated in Monday's Made in Manitoba Tour hosted by Manitoba Beef Producers. Tours such as these provide important perspective about the conditions producers raise cattle in and offer opportunities to meet producers and industry representatives from across the country.

Huge thanks to Manitoba Beef Producers for organizing the tour and to all the gracious hosts who welcomed the group.

The tour began, like all good farm tours do, with biosecurity measures.

Laura and Ryan Plett of Sawmill Creek Livestock shared their successes and challenges raising cattle on land shared with deer, wolves, foxes and bears in a heavily treed area. Previous generations at Sawmill Creek Livestock attempted to cultivate the open area and grow crops. Their operation is an excellent example of utilizing marginal land to grow nutritious protein.

Oak Hammock Marsh is the home of Ducks Unlimited Canada's head office. Visitors are welcomed with a marsh diorama showing all types of wildlife and a view of the water.

The Honourable Rebecca Chartrand, Minister of Northern and Arctic Affairs, Minister responsible for the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency and MP for Churchill—Keewatinook Aski joined the tour at Oak Hammock Marsh. She spoke to attendees and took time to answer questions and visit with tour attendees.

Scott and Janine Duguid of Loch Wood Farm shared their diversified cow-calf, forage, and forage seed and grain operation. The cattle at Loch Wood Farm are fed through a combination of cover crops, rotational grazing and bale grazing.
