The Canadian Cattle Youth Council (CCYC) participated in its eighth annual fly-in meetings in Ottawa last week ahead of the Canadian Cattle Association (CCA) Annual General Meeting.
On March 23, 2026, young beef producers from across Canada met with Members of Parliament, Senators, and the Canadian Agricultural Youth Council to share the challenges and opportunities facing the next generation of Canada’s beef industry.
CCYC delegates met with Senator Rob Black, MPs John Barlow, Grant Jackson, Steven Bonk, Blaine Calkins, Blake Richards, and Dan Mazier.
Key priorities included the next policy framework, particularly improvements to the Business Risk Management (BRM) programs, and the need for equitable programming across sectors. Delegates also raised concerns about the recent research facility closures and proposed potential paths forward to preserve these important scientists and topics of study.
Delegates emphasized the importance of strong trade relationships, especially as the upcoming CUSMA negotiations approach. They also shared concerns about the potential impacts of expanding Mercosur trade to allow beef into Canada and stressed the importance of protecting Canada’s long-standing positive relationship with the U.SA.
Later in the week, the Council was able to attend the parliamentary reception hosted by the Canadian Cattle Association where they strengthened relationships and continued key conversations from the fly-in meetings.
