CCA's Stampede Week Highlights

Beef Operation Tours with Parliamentarians

The Canadian Cattle Association (CCA) was honoured to host Parliamentarians and officials who made the trip to Calgary for Stampede 2023. The tours offered the chance to discuss advocacy priorities and make policy connections to the day-to-day operations of producers. Pictured below:

  • Parliamentary Secretary to Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food Francis Drouin (MP for Glengarry—Prescott—Russell, Ontario),

  • Agriculture Committee Chair Kody Blois (MP for Kings—Hants, Nova Scotia)

  • Agriculture Committee Critic Alistair MacGregor (MP for Cowichan—Malahat—Langford, British Columbia)

  • CCA President Nathan Phinney

  • CCA Past President Bob Lowe

  • Beef Cattle Research Council (BCRC) Executive Director Andrea Brocklebank

  • Youth Leadership Coordinator Jessica Radau

  • Senior Director of Government and Public Affairs Jennifer Babcock

These tours are instrumental in building relationships with Parliamentarians and illustrate the importance of preserving native grasslands and the care with which producers manage their herds and the surrounding ecosystem. CCA is appreciative of the producers who hosted and to the MPs who took the time out of their busy Stampede week schedules to get tour a slice of cattle country!

National Cattle Feeders Association (NCFA) Rimrock Feeders Tour

Another opportunity to emphasize the important role beef cattle play in the environment was provided by the National Cattle Feeders Association (NCFA) through their tour of the Rimrock Feeders facility on July 12. This event highlighted the amount of innovation and opportunity happening in the beef cattle space and provided CCA staff and others in the industry to speak with MLAs and MPs on the future of the Canadian beef industry. Below, Rebecca Schultz, the Alberta Minister of Environment and Protected Areas, met with CCA President Nathan Phinney and CCA General Manager Ryder Lee. Minister Schultz' comments on the environmental benefits of beef production (pictured below right) were well received by attendees.

Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) Roundtable

In addition to the tours, CCA participated with other beef industry leaders in an Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) roundtable. The discussion included trade, sustainability, current drought impacts, transportation, and more. Both industry and government emphasized the need for a science-based approach to regulations and policies.

$12 Million Announced in Beef Research Grants

On Wednesday, CCA welcomed a positive funding announcement from the Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership. This federal funding to the Beef Cattle Research Council (BCRC) will help provide results that will continue to support the sustainability of the beef sector.
