On Tuesday, May 6 the Trilateral Meeting between Mexico, the United States and Canada on international bovine and meat trade took place in Aguascalientes, Aguascaliente, within the framework of the National Cattle Convention.

The meeting was headed by the senior leadership of the three organizations: Homer Garcia de Lata of the National Confederation of Livestock Organizations (CNOG); Buck Wehrbein of the National Cattle Breeders Association (NCBA), and Dennis Laycraft of the Canadian Cattle Association.

The three leaders recognized the importance of maintaining trade flow in the region and to work closely in preparation for the review/renegotiation of the trade agreement between Canada, the United States and Mexico (CUSMA).

Information was shared about actions being taken to address the new-world screwworm outbreak in Mexico and the importance of sharing with the respective governments that non-tariff measures that could have an impact on trade in the region, such as the labelling of country of origin, are in accordance with international norms or have technical and scientific justification, to assure that such measures are not more restrictive than necessary.

Additional priorities of the three countries were discussed, highlighting the reopening of the border for export of cattle from Mexico to the United States, and animal health risks related to the import of meat from South American countries.

The meeting also included the participation of representatives of the exporting states of Mexico: Tamaulipas, Nuevo León, Sonora, Chihuahua, Coahuila and Durango, as well as representatives of producers and importers from Kansas, New Mexico and Missouri.
