The EU and Germany have informed the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH) that Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) was detected in three water buffaloes in Germany. All animals in the affected herd have been destroyed, and Germany is investigating further to determine whether the disease has spread.
Germany identified the FMD serotype as serotype 0. A 3 km protection zone and 10 km surveillance zone have been established. All animals within the protection zone, including 200 hogs and 12 water buffaloes, have been destroyed. No further infected animals have been detected in Germany, but the exact source of the disease remains unknown.
Canada, along with other trade partners of Germany, is taking protective measures. As a result, trade with Germany has been halted, and no meat products from Germany produced after December 12, 2024, will be allowed into Canada. Other countries, including the US, South Korea, and Australia, have banned imports of German livestock and meat. CFIA is working with German authorities and is in close contact with the CBSA to enhance security for travelers and border control. CFIA has also informed DG Sante (EU’s Health and Food Safety) to convey to member states not to export any products originating from Germany as per Canadian restrictions.
CFIA urges agricultural associations to emphasize biosecurity practices, reminding industry members of the need for heightened awareness and precautions to prevent the spread of FMD and other foreign diseases.
