Beef industry mentorship programs team up for professional development event

(L-R) McDonald’s Canada’s Head of Sustainability and Impact Strategy on the Canada Impact Team, Ashwin Ramesh, and guest speaker, Kim McConnell. Dec 15, 2022.

The Canadian Cattle Young Leaders (CYL) and Beef Cattle Research Council (BCRC) Beef Researcher Mentorship Program teamed up for an inspiring evening about mentorship.

On December 15, 2022, mentees and mentors of both beef industry mentorship programs connected virtually to learn from guest speaker, Kim McConnell; a leader in the Canadian agriculture industry with many notable achievements including being named a Member of the Order of Canada, Canadian Agricultural Hall of Fame inductee, and an award-winning mentor.

Thank you to our webinar presenting sponsor and Canadian Cattle Young Leaders Foundation Partner, McDonald’s Canada, for their generous support of young leaders in the Canadian beef industry. It was great to have McDonald’s Canada’s Head of Sustainability and Impact Strategy on the Canada Impact Team, Ashwin Ramesh, join participants for the event. And thank you to guest speaker, Kim McConnell, for generously volunteering his time to share his wisdom through entertaining and thought-provoking tales!

Participants gained many valuable tips for building a successful mentoring relationship, and effective communication, networking and leadership skills. Some of those key takeaways include:

Tips for mentors - Share your mistakes with your mentee, they're great learning opportunities!

- Open your rolodex to help open doors for your mentee.

- People are craving deeper discussions. How can you help initiate those with your mentee?

Tips for mentees

- Follow up with a note of thanks when you meet a new contact! Invest in your future connections.

- Communication is key! Keep your emails short. Concise.

- Set a goal to have lunch with five inspiring industry leaders. It's amazing what happens when you just ask!

Thank you to this year’s mentors of both programs for generously investing your time to build a new generation of leaders within the Canadian beef industry. We look forward to watching these relationships flourish.
