On May 17, Dr. Reynold Bergen, Science Director of Beef Cattle Research Council and Fawn Jackson, Director of Policy and International Affairs, appeared on behalf of CCA at House of Commons Standing Committee on Environment and Sustainable Development (ENVI) on the study of Bill C-12, Canadian Net-Zero Emissions Accountability Act.
This opportunity allowed the Canadian Cattlemen's Association (CCA) to speak directly to environmental policy makers on how beef production can help reach Canada’s conservation and climate goals which are also goals of the beef industry. They discussed three challenges: reduce Canadian beef emission intensity through continued advancements in genetics, animal health management and nutrition; further increase carbon sequestration on grasslands; and maintain and protect the 44 million acres of grasslands under beef producers’ care.
In the past year, CCA has taken the time to meet with many Parliamentarians focused on climate change policies, putting additional advocacy efforts towards demonstrating the positive environmental benefits of Canadian beef production. It was a positive step to see ENVI invite CCA to share how beef production will help Canada achieve net-zero emissions and we look forward to being partners to the Government as we work towards net-zero emissions in Canada.
