The Canadian Cattle Association (CCA) took part in the review by Innovation, Science, and Economic Development Canada (ISED) on the future of competition policy, which is administered by the Competition Bureau through the Competition Act.
CCA’s submission emphasized the need for a globally competitive beef market, particularly through regulatory alignment with key trading partners and ensuring market transparency by undertaking a market power study aimed at the packer and retail levels every five years. We also encouraged protection for whistleblowers under the Competition Act. Furthermore, we also called for a whole-of-government approach to encouraging competition, particularly through streamlining border crossings and allowing smaller and medium-sized meat processors to expand and grow. Finally, CCA also urged the federal government to look at reducing regulatory barriers to entry for SMEs to enter the meat industry, which would contribute to local food security and increase “local” demand for cattle.
We look forward to participating in further discussions on the future of the Competition Act and will continue to monitor as necessary.
