Following a March stakeholder briefing, the Canadian Cattlemen’s Association (CCA) has been working hard to advocate for the exemption of ground beef, from Health Canada’s proposed front-of-package (FOP) regulations. Under this regulatory change, labels will be added to products that are considered high in sodium, sugar, and saturated fat according to different threshold levels. Ground beef is currently caught in the proposed regulation, while other cuts of whole meat have been given an exemption. Other countries with front-of-package labelling have not required single-ingredient products, such as ground beef, to have labels.
As part of these efforts, CCA created a grassroots campaign to ensure beef producers from across the country could voice their concerns as well. If you haven’t yet joined, you can sign up at www.dontlabelmybeef.ca.
Thank you to all beef producers and Canadians who have joined us in our efforts. CCA continues to engage in regular discussions with the Government regarding Health Canada’s proposed regulations and the impacts such a change will have on consumers as well as the Canadian beef producers.
We will provide further updates as more information becomes available.
