Collaborative project highlights the role of sustainable grazing in protecting water sources

Cows and Fish and the Southern Alberta Land Trust Society (SALTS) partnered on a recent project to work with ranchers in two important tributaries of the Bow River in Alberta to assess riparian health trends where grazing is the main land use. The goal of this project was to compare data that had been collected at these sites 15-20 years ago with new information from the same locations.

The reported results of this project were very positive, concluding ranching and watershed health can go hand in hand. The work showed a significant improvement in riparian health over 20 years, where average riparian health was well above the provincial average. The study also shows grazing can be compatible with good riparian health and improve riparian health over time. In addition, the project highlights that ranchers who adapt and apply beneficial grazing management practices are key to success.
