Food Day Canada shines a light on Canadian cuisine

Canada is rich in food and incredible people who help put food on our tables. This has never been more apparent than this past year. Canadians are invited to come together to enjoy our food and give thanks to the people who make it happen on Food Day Canada, Saturday July 31, 2021.

What is Food Day Canada?

Food Day Canada is our nation's largest and longest-running celebration of Canadian food. It is an opportunity for all Canadians to show their support for our chefs, farmers, fishers and producers, and to celebrate the culinary diversity of Canadian food.

The roots of Food Day Canada were started in 2003 by well-known Canadian culinary champion, Anita Stewart, as a show of support for Canada’s beef farmers during the BSE crisis. It was dubbed The World’s Longest Barbeque. Over the years chefs have joined the party as great ambassadors for Canadian food and it continues to grow. It is always held the first Saturday of the long weekend in August.

Who? Anyone and everyone who loves Canadian ingredients. Farmers, ranchers, fishers, chefs, home cooks, writers, winemakers, brewers, food processors, researchers…and the list goes on.

What’s Happening? Canadians are coming together to declare Food Day Canada. We are shopping, cooking, eating and honouring those who produce and prepare our foods across the nation. The spirit of pride will shine as iconic structures are being lit red and white in honour of our Canadian cuisine from Vancouver Island to Newfoundland. Look for the map of locations on FoodDayCanada.ca. Shine your own lights red and white at 9:00 p.m.

Where? Anywhere and everywhere. Backyard barbecues, picnics, potlucks, patios and kitchen tables. In person and online. Enjoy Canadian-grown, Canadian-made food and drinks!

How can YOU participate? Take the Food Day Canada pledge to shop, cook and dine like a Canadian at FoodDayCanada.ca Don’t forget to share like a Canadian and invite some of your favourite people to join you to enjoy a meal, in person or virtually.
