On June 24th the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) announced Dr. Mary Jane Ireland as the new Chief Veterinary Officer (CVO) and the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) Delegate for Canada. Dr. Ireland is also the Executive Director of the Animal Health Directorate within the Program and Policy Branch at the CFIA.
As Chief Veterinary Officer for Canada, Dr. Ireland will provide national leadership to ensure that Canada's animal and veterinary public health infrastructure is positioned to effectively manage current and emerging disease threats in order to protect animal and human health. As OIE delegate, she will represent Canada at the World Assembly of Delegates, among other duties. For more information about Dr. Ireland and this position, click here. CCA thanks Dr. Jaspinder Komal for the accomplishments and positive impact he has had in this role over the last four years. Notable achievements include his leadership to advance a national framework to tackle the threat of African swine fever, strong collaboration with OIE as Vice-President of the Regional Commission for the Americas and the Council of Chief Veterinary Officers, and expansion of opportunities for veterinary students to gain experience at the CFIA. He also was key in achieving an important milestone for Canada - the negligible risk status recognition for BSE from the OIE. Dr. Komal will continue in his current role as the Vice-President for Science Branch.
