Outcomes of the FPT Agriculture Ministers’ Meeting

Canada’s Federal, Provincial and Territorial Agriculture Ministers met in Fredericton, New Brunswick from July 19 to 21, 2023. CCA President, Nathan Phinney, had the opportunity to participate in the pre-FPT roundtable with the Canadian Federation of Agriculture (CFA) and other industry stakeholders. Nathan highlighted the impacts of adverse weather producers are facing across the country and emphasized the need to move ahead with the various provincial Agri-Recovery assessments as soon as possible.

Key outcomes from the meeting of importance to cattle producers include:

  • Expansion of Livestock Price Insurance (LPI) to the Maritimes, which has been a long-time CCA policy ask. LPI is a risk management tool which benefits all producers and is especially helpful for young producers who have not had the chance to build up equity.

  • Recommitment from Ministers to provide drought relief to producers in western Canada by working across governments to share data and complete the AgriRecovery assessments in a timely manner.

  • Confirmation of investment to establish a Canadian Foot and Mouth (FMD) Vaccine Bank, which will secure adequate vaccine doses to ensure a rapid response in the event of an outbreak.

  • Commitment to continuous improvements of business risk management (BRM) program to support farmers and ranchers. Ministers agreed to implementing a new optional model for AgriStability to help ensure timeliness, simplicity, and predictability.

  • Discussion surrounding Specified Risk Material (SRM), which is another key advocacy ask of CCA. We need to ensure an evidence-based outcome and alignment with the United States of America (USA) SRM removal and disposal rules.
