This online, educational grazing simulation aims to teach students about the ecosystem services that are provided by raising cattle on grasslands including wildlife habitat, biodiversity and carbon sequestration, increasing their understanding of the benefits of beef production. Total play time is estimated between 15 – 20 minutes.
Delivery:
This first version of the game is specific to Alberta and has been connected to curriculum outcomes for students in grades 7 – 10. Ag for Life, the Alberta member of Agriculture in the Classroom Canada, will be delivering the game both online and through in-classroom learning. A special gaming kiosk is being built for the Know Your Food trailer, that travels to schools, conferences and events across Alberta.
How to Play:
The game can be easily accessed by visiting the website, www.gotggame.ca. Teachers and educators register and receive a code to track student play and pull detailed reports. Students can either play online – via computer, tablet or phone – or download directly to play offline. Please note that Safari and Internet Explorer browsers are not supported. The game is also available for download on various platforms (the App Store, Google Play and Amazon).
Partners:
This project was made possible through the Youth Literacy in Agriculture funding grant provided by the Canadian Agricultural Partnership (CAP) with the Government of Alberta, as well as financial contributions provided by Public and Stakeholder Engagement, the Canadian Cattle Foundation and Ducks Unlimited Canada. In-kind sponsorship of the game was provided by Birds Canada and the Nature Conservancy of Canada.
Next steps:
Additional versions of the game that are specific to other provinces will be released in the coming months. As well, two simplified (“tradeshow”) versions will be available with an estimated total play time of 3-5 minutes, ideal for public events with a variety of attendees. Promotional plans with additional provinces are underway and expected to launch for this fall school season.
Western Canada “tradeshow” version: April 1
Eastern Canada “tradeshow” version: July 1
ON, MB, SK and BC classroom versions: August 15
