Earlier this month, the Weston Family Foundation announced the launch of the Weston Family Prairie Grasslands Initiative with nearly $25 million awarded to five organizations to collaborate on one of the largest prairie grasslands conservation efforts in Canadian history.
The Saskatchewan Stock Growers Foundation’s (SSGF) was one of the five organizations to receive funding. SSGF was awarded $3.4 million from the Foundation. CCA supported the application that will see SSGF build on the success of Species at Risk Partnerships on Agricultural Lands’ first five years to achieve real environmental outcomes. These projects enhance the grasslands and species at risk habitat, and also increase the viability of ranching, enabling a younger generation of ranchers to continue caring for the prairie.
Native grasslands are the most threatened terrestrial ecosystems in Canada. They are the last refuge for 31 species at risk, and an important forage resource for Saskatchewan’s cow-calf sector.
The four other organizations receiving funding are Nature Conservancy of Canada, Ducks Unlimited Canada, Grasslands National Park (Parks Canada), and Meewasin Valley Authority.
