In 2021, the United Nations (UN) will convene a Food Systems Summit as part of the drive to reduce world hunger and achieve their identified Sustainable Development Goals by 2030. This will be the first world Food Summit in 25 years with the last Food Summit taking place in 1996. A key concern for the beef industry is the global forum’s recommendation to reduce meat consumption in middle- and high-income countries. The benefits of beef production for both our environment and human nutrition are plentiful and based on science. CCA’s goal is to ensure these facts are part of the international dialogue, which could impact both policy decisions and public perception here in Canada.
CCA is coordinating a national multi-stakeholder strategy to monitor, participate, and engage on various Food Summit Action Tracks to accomplish this goal. All industry partners are encouraged to contribute in this global dialogue, but a special emphasis has been placed on primary producer involvement. If you are a beef farmer or rancher that would like to be connected to resources and tools to engage in online conversations surrounding the Food Systems summit are encouraged to reach out to Amie Peck, Stakeholder Engagement Manager at pecka@cattle.ca.
