Using enzymes to enhance drought feed supplies

Preparing for the winter months, producers face the challenge of limited feed supply due to this year’s drought. Many have looked to lower quality forages to supplement winter supplies such as canola straw, pea straw, mixed slough grasses and more, where animal nutrition and feed efficiency remains a top priority.

The Canadian Cattlemen’s Association has continued to look for avenues to help mitigate the impacts of the devastating drought, including reaching out to industry stakeholders for creative solutions.

Alltech has presented their Fibrozyme product as a possible option for producers to positively support the feed and energy intake of cattle fed poor-quality feeds. Fibrozyme specifically works on high Neutral Detergent Fiber feeds by breaking down hemicellulose and cellulose that limit intake, overall supporting improved feed efficiency. Alltech saw an increased digestibility of 7.5 per cent on some straws, and an 18 per cent increase in digestibility on slough grass hay.

From a feedlot perspective with cattle on corn grain finishing diets, Amaize is Alltech’s alpha-amylase enzyme complex that changes how the starch is broken down and utilized by the microbes, enhancing animal performance. A summary of 14 feedlot trials at both universities and commercial facilities showed hot carcass weights and dressing percentages maximized using Amaize.
