Federal, provincial, and territorial (FPT) governments are in the latter stages of stakeholder consultations as they finalize their negotiations on the next, five-year, agricultural policy framework. The framework will be implemented on April 1, 2023. Officials are hoping to present a draft multilateral framework agreement to ministers of agriculture for their consideration at their July 2022 meeting.
The agreement will address the priorities that ministers outlined in the 2021 “Guelph Statement”. These include: Building Sector Capacity, Growth & Competitiveness, Climate Change and Environment, Science, Research and Innovation, Market Development and Trade, Resiliency and Public Trust.
Measures to tackle climate change are an important consideration in the NPF and were the focus of a consultation session lead by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada on April 13, 2022. Representatives from the Canadian Cattlemen’s Association and Beef Farmers of Ontario participated.
The beef sector understands the importance of addressing environmental concerns. However, this cannot come at the expense of a sound, equitable business risk management suite or research programming that address producer priorities. In addition, there is an ongoing need to enhance export market access and ensure Canada has the capacity to quickly respond to a foreign animal disease outbreak. CCA will ensure that officials continue to keep these in mind as they conclude the development of the framework agreement.
